How To Lay Kerbs Step one> Excavation. The depth of excavation depends on two factors> the height of the kerb and what up stand is intended. All organic materials weeds/grass on the top layer should be removed as this will cause rot and may cause unsettlement after time. When the desired level is reached the surface should be compacted and even. Step two> A bedding layer of 100mm of a semi-dry concrete foundation, created with a ratio of 1>2>4 cement|sand| aggregate would be ideal. Good practice is submerge one third of the kerb into the bedding mortar mix. Ensure to keep a uniformity to placing the kerbs to ensure consistent level. Step three> Kerbs should be laid close jointed with a joint typically between 5-10mm thick. Haunching or backing concrete (what supports kerbs) should be up to two thirds of the kerb. This would only be reduced to accommodate paving on either side. Step four> Allow to dry sufficiently before proceeding to pave either side of kerb. Step five> Pointing or finishing. All joints should be fully compacted with compacted mortar to give strength.
